My First Experience Buying Leather
When I purchased my first piece of leather, I was an idiot. Christmas had just ended and I had a little spending money to buy the leather for my first job. So obviously, I opened up Google and typed in something such as buy leather for leatherworking.’ Indian Leather Tannery was the first search result. When there I looked around their leathers and determined by moderate quality leather, because who wants to buy the crappy stuff. Finding a cut in my budget, I struck an order, full of my information, and has been done. I’d successfully ordered my first item of leather… sort of. The reality was I did not even know what sort of leather I wanted. I didn’t understand which parts of the hide I had (yup it things… more than you would think). I didn’t understand what tannery to receive my leather from and did not really even know they used widely different procedures. And what the hell is chrome tanned anyways.
After the leather came it was possibly the ugliest piece of leather I had seen, and that has only been reinforced by my experience because. It had been mangled, filled with creases, bent, and the grain on the flesh side stuck out a good half inch. Since that time I have learned a lot about buying leather, and have purchased a lot of affordable pieces which are much better quality. So, now that I have a bit of experience under my belt, I wrote down some tips to help you not be an idiot also:
Buy Affordable
Sometimes I get really excited about a job and dream big, which is great, except that it means I miss how hard a number of the facts are. When you’re new, you need to come to terms with the fact that you’re likely to make mistakes no matter how hard you try. Things you won’t even think of will go wrong… like something bizarre like your brown dye coming out with a green sheen. Make your mistakes on affordable leather. There is nothing worse than making a wrong cut or screwing up the dying process on a sheet of leather that you just dropped $300 on. If you have money to waste, don’t hesitate to squander it on a custom order from my store, not on costly mistakes.
Indian Leather Tannery is terrific for buying affordable leather.

Here are a couple of things to be aware of when buying leather from Indian Leather Tannery.
- Their lowest-priced leather is named Craftsman Oak. That is the one you need. It will have scars on it, stains where the leather got mangled in the machine, bad grain, and possibly even some brands on it. All those flaws knock down the price and make it great leather to learn with.
- Indian Leather Tannery is always having sales. I do not think I have ever gone to Indian Leather Tannery and not seen a cut of the Craftsman Oak available. Occasionally it’s the single shoulder, sometimes it’s the side, sometimes it’s the stomach, and so on, but something is always available. As I write this, they’ve double shoulders available for $60. Start looking for those sales – just be certain it’s the correct cut for what you’re doing.
- Craftsman Oak leathers are not from exactly the exact same location. They catch the leather which does not make the cut from other tanneries and lump them together and sell them as Craftsman Oak. As is true with all leathers from other tanneries, they do not dye the same, do not burnish the same, and generally have a different rigidity. The majority of these things can be taken care of. However, once you’re studying and one day burnishing is simple and the next it is suddenly unworkable, it is very tough to keep track of your progress. That is why I suggest buying a bigger piece of leather (sides function for this). A larger piece of leather will be sufficient for numerous projects, which gives you a consistent experience with the leather and better track your progress.
- Any other leather in Indian Leather Tannery is generally overpriced. Indian Leather Tannery does provide higher quality leathers, but I do not suggest buying them there. As soon as you feel comfortable that you won’t make many costly errors, it is time to buy from a tannery that works with younger customers.
- Go in if possible. This is one of those really great things about Indian Leather Tannery. They’re around and if you live near a large city there’s a great chance you can find an Indian Leather Tannery nearby. When you go in, you get to test out all of the variables yourself. You get to see for yourself how large the piece of leather is, that really varies a lot. You can see how hard or how supple it is. You get to see what the gain on the back looks like. You get the idea. with it early on.
And That’s It.
Buying affordable leather is the ideal choice when you’re starting off and Indian Leather Tannery is an excellent place to find it. Hopefully, these tips help you get the most from your experience at Indian Leather Tannery.
