Gloves must have leather or an equivalent construction in the fingers, palm and cuffs that cover the sleeves opening. The jacket must have a cuff that extends halfway up the forearm and be worn over the jacket’s sleeves. One glove is sufficient for the weapon hand. However, some fencers may wear both gloves if they are frequently hit by the trailing hand.
Nowadays, gloves are made of washable materials instead of leather. These materials can often be stained by dyes so don’t wash them with white uniforms. Hand-washing gloves in the sink is a better option.
Gloves shouldn’t be too tight or they are more likely to tear. Different levels of padding can be found in the fingers and back of the hands, which is useful for epee or sabre fencing.
Gloves can quickly deteriorate under heavy usage, sometimes lasting only one season. You can prolong the wear of gloves by applying a bit of cloth tape to the high-wear areas (end of thumb & forefinger, for instance) when they are new and not after holes have formed.
Motorcycle gloves, precision welding gloves, and common workman’s gloves are all acceptable substitutes for genuine fencing hands, as long as the fingers and palms are not padded or supple enough to retain the feel of the blade. To prevent blades from running up the sleeves, a long cuff should be used. Non-fencing gloves may have to have an opening cut in the cuff for the wire.
To extend the arm target to the hands, sabre gloves must be made of metallic lame or a manchette that slips over the glove. The manchette should have an elastic cuff, which provides an electrical connection to the main jacket. No cord is necessary.
